Cookies That Sealed The Deal

Are you scratching your head confused about what to bring to the cookout? Don't go bald yet. Perhaps I can help. There is this recipe of yummy snickerdoodles I learned from Katie that will not only save you from frustration, but will absolutely blow your mind with their taste. I promise you will keep a separate tray for yourself.

A Little History Of My First Encounter

We were quite new in our dating days and the romance was outpouring like crazy. Not that it has now ended. In fact, it has simply morphed into a deeper dimension. We just celebrated our third wedding anniversary.

Like real love birds do, we decided to go on a weekend trip. At that time, we were both living in Zambia (Southern Africa) and doing mission work, working with children affected by AIDS. We worked for an organization called Children in Crisis. It was a rewarding and life changing experience.

I am sure you guessed right. Yes, we went on a safari.

If you have never been to Zambia, you've not been to the real Africa yet. It is the place where you find one of the seven wonders of the world - The Victoria Falls. Three times the size of Niagara falls. A breath taking magnificent wonder that will cause you to throw away your big-bang theory, and immediately embrace the belief in an intelligent creator of the universe. Before you die, put it on the must see list. Or if you are planning a honeymoon, go to Zambia and marvel at the Victoria Falls.

However, that is not where we went for that particular weekend. This time, we went to the Kafue National Park (a natural game reserve) one of the largest protected areas in the world. It measures about 22500 square kilometers (8687.298 mi²) which is half the size of Switzerland.

It was here that we had face to face encounters with a solo male Hippo outside our little tent. He had huge bite marks all over his body suspected to have been inflicted on him by bigger hippos fighting for territorial control. In the middle of the night, we were surrounded by a herd of over 200 giant elephants, some double the size of the Asian elephants we see in Zoos and Circuses . The next morning we ran for our lives, chased by two warthogs that later turned out to be friendly. One was nicknamed Pumba after the character in Lion King.

And hey, I almost forgot, two Hippos head butted our boat twice during our boat cruise. You could literally feel your heart coming to your throat. It was so scary. If you know about Hippos, they are very territorial animals. The National Geographic ranks them as the most dangerous animal in the world. Then on our way back we disturbed two elephants that were swimming across the river and they charged at us. Luckily our highly trained guide swiftly navigated us out of the danger Zone. You ask me if I can do it again? Absolutely! You must go and experience it for yourself. It's an experience you will never forget for the rest of your life.

It was during this very exciting boat cruise that Katie introduced me to the snickerdoodles. She had baked and packed them for us as a snack . From there, our love exploaded. If there was anything that sealed the deal for me, this was it. I know that may sound crazy. Unless, you have taken time to study the connection of food and relationships. Why do you think most first dates involve some kind of eating out? There is a power that works miracles in food that you cannot ignore in any relationship. Anyway, that's bonus advice. People get paid for this. I'll write a special hub on that soon. Let us get on to the recipe.

I hope you enjoy this recipe.

Prep Time: 20 minutes
Total Time: 45 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup butter
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 tsp vanilla
  • 2 3/4 cups flour
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 1/2 Tbsp lemon juice
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 3 Tbsp sugar
  • 2 tsp cinnamon

Preparation:

  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees
  2. In a mixer, cream together butter, sugar, eggs, lemon juice, and vanilla. Slowly add in flour, baking soda and salt.
  3. Rolls the dough into balls, then roll the balls in a mixture of sugar and cinnamon. Place on a cookie sheet.
  4. Bake for 8-9 minutes. Be careful not to leave these on the hot pan for too long before moving them to a cooling rack. They can easily dry out if they are over-baked. You want them to still maintain some moisture and softness.

These will go with beverage, including just plain water. Bon appetit!

So, this great love is really about the snickerdoodles...LOL! Seriously, I loved this hub. Your writing is wonderful. I am an avid baker and don't really have an outstanding snickerdoodle recipe. Will have to try this one!

I love your writing about the beloved animals you encountered.

Katie caught your tummy with her great snickdoodles, congratulations Dexter

Hahaha...Sylvia it's not just about Snickerdoodles, but they spiced up things. Katie also agrees that my friends were equally sold on them and no doubt campaigned on her behalf. Thanks Writer20. I am loving your hubs as well.

Hi Fuller-Life, I'm on my way to the supermarket to get the ingredients to make these cookies, they are new to me. Also, I really enjoyed the description of your Safari, almost felt like I was there. LOL!

Good job. Thanks for the recipe. Although snickerdoodles aren't my favorite cookies, I love to say "snickerdoodles" a lot. I just love the way it sounds. LOL =D

Fuller-Life 10 months ago

Hey Om...way to go. So, what are your favorite cookies, if not snickerdoodles? Is there some story to your love with the name?

Bud Gallant 10 months ago

These look pretty tasty. I wondered what a snickerdoodle was. Now I know! I'd like to try some chocolate peanut butter snickerdoodles. Is that possible?

Fuller-Life 10 months ago

Hi Bud Gallant. Great to hear from you. Yes it's possible. I've tried peanut butter ones. But adding chocolate sounds even more divine. Go for it!

Fuller-Life: I fell in love with Snickerdoodles before I even tasted them because I loved the name! Your recipe is close to mine, only I mix in tons of cinnamon cuz it's one of my favorite spices, especially in cinnamon ice cream.

Thank you for sharing this recipe and its historic place in your life.

Fuller-Life 7 months ago

Hey I love cinnamon too. Though, I must confess that overuse it sometimes, even in my pancakes and waffles. lol

Well, I can't recall anyone ever using a wonderful story about a safari in Africa as a run up to a cookie recipe, so congrats on being the first!

I love love LOVE Snickerdoodles! Especially while they're still warm. Heaven! Alas, I lost my own recipe years ago...perhaps unconsciously on purpose after realizing every Snickerdoodle that ever passed my lips ended up on my hips.

But just like a moth is attracted to a flame, as soon as I saw the title of this hub, I *had* to read it. Hard to do while reaching for a mixing bowl and all the ingredients I could remember. But miracle of miracles, my hips are safe! I'm out of lemon juice! (Just don't tell anybody I bookmarked this hub for future reference, okay?) ;D

Hahaha...You made my day. "Every Snickerdoodle that ever passed my lips ended up on my hips." You should write a song on that. It rhymes very well. Don't worry, I won't tell!
